Yesterday, 11th July 2024, MBRRACE have published a state of the nation report.
‘MBRRACE-UK perinatal mortality surveillance’
It looks at UK perinatal deaths of babies born in 2022.
Overall, Stillbirth rates across all pregnancies have decreased across the UK, however Neonatal deaths have increased.
Concerningly, twins are nearly 3 times more likely to be stillborn and more than 4.5 times more likely to result in a neonatal death than a singleton pregnancy.
Alarmingly, triplets are 4.5 times more likely to be stillborn and 11 times more likely to result in a neonatal death compared to a singleton pregnancy.
The 2022 report shows that 16 out of 1000 twins and 31 out of 1000 triplet or higher order multiple babies die.
These figures exclude babies born before 24 weeks and terminations for medical reasons.
Despite general improvements compared to the 2021 data, inequalities in deprivation and ethnicity remain across all pregnancies.
Sharon Darke, Co-Founder and CEO of Footprints Baby Loss Twin and Triplet Support:
“The continuing numbers and higher risk of twins and triplets dying before, during or after birth highlights the need for bereavement support from Footprints for this unique community.
Since our launch in January 24, we have been supporting many families who have experienced the death of one or more of their twins or triplets. It’s so sad to be hearing from so many families whose multiples have died.”
Suzie Scofield, Co-Founder and COO:
“It is concerning to see that your baby is more likely to die if you come from the most deprived areas or are of Asian or Black ethnicity.”
Footprints supports families who experience the death of a twin, triplet or more at any stage. We provide vital support to parents and families given by those who have first hand expereince of twin or triplet loss.
