Latest MBRRACE – UK Report

By Footprints | 22/06/2026
2 min readThe latest MBRRACE-UK report highlights the ongoing inequalities faced by babies from twin and triplet pregnancies.

As we share this data, it’s important to recognise its limitations. The report does not include babies who have died following termination for medical reasons (TFMR), and many babies who died before 24 weeks’ gestation are not reflected in these figures. The triplet data is also based on a very small number of pregnancies, with statistics drawn from just six triplet sets.
These figures help us understand where care and outcomes need to improve. However, they can never fully reflect the reality of loss. Behind every statistic are much-loved babies – deeply missed, and families whose lives have been changed forever.
MBRRACE-UK 2026
Twin pregnancies account for less than 3% of births, yet babies from twin pregnancies remain almost 3 times more likely to be stillborn than singleton babies.:
Twin neonatal mortality fell in 2024, showing that improvements in care can make a difference.
Behind every statistic is a family.
In 2024, 150 babies from twin pregnancies were stillborn and 114 died during the neonatal period.
For each of these families, the impact is lifelong.
Progress is welcome but the gap remains too wide.
Twins remain:
• 2.8 times more likely to be stillborn
• 4.5 times more likely to die during the neonatal period
Triplets remain:
• 2.3 times more likely to be stillborn
• 4.7 times more likely to die during the neonatal period
(this data is based on 6 sets of triplets)
Continued investment in specialist multiple pregnancy care remains essential.
“Progress is encouraging but babies from twin and triplet pregnancies continue to face significantly higher risks than singleton babies.”
“The report does not include many losses before 24 weeks gestation or most terminations for medical reasons (TFMR). As a result, we know that the number of families experiencing the loss of a twin, triplet or more is greater than these figures alone can show.
