Sharon was pleased for the opportunity to be part of today’s Maternity APPG at Westminster.

There was an important focus on the need for safe staffing – not just in terms of numbers, but ensuring staff are well trained, well supported, and able to work consistently within the roles they are trained for. It was clear how central this is to delivering safe, compassionate care for families, as well as supporting staff wellbeing and mental health.

From our perspective of supporting bereaved twin and triplet families, Sharon shared how the impact of care stays with families forever. We support parents who have lost one or more of their babies, sometimes where care has fallen short, but we are equally passionate about ensuring healthcare professionals feel supported in their roles too and receive specialised training in twin and triplet loss.

There are added complexities in twin and triplet pregnancies, and it is important that training and care pathways reflect this. Sharon also shared one family’s experience where concerns were not listened to and they were sent home, tragically resulting in the loss of both babies – a reminder of how vital it is that every voice is heard.

Thank you to all of the speakers and to everyone in the room for such an open and thoughtful discussion.

And particularly to Michelle Welsh for leading with such passion – it’s clear how deeply she cares and her commitment to driving meaningful change.
