MBRRACE-UK perinatal mortality surveillance

The latest MBRRACE-UK report (8th May 2025) continues to show a disproportionate number of twin and triplet deaths compared to singleton pregnancies. Whilst twin and triplet pregnancies only account for 3% of all pregnancies they represent 8% of the deaths.

The report is based on the 2023 data and shows that rates of overall baby death have decreased.

Twins are 3 times more likely to result in a stillbirth and triplets 4 and a half times more likely than a singleton pregnancy.

Twins are also 5 times more likely to die from a neonatal death and 9 times more likely for triplet pregnancies than singleton pregnancies.

It’s also alarming to see the stark reality that black babies are more than twice as likely to die as white babies. We will be supporting all efforts to change this going forwards.

Sharon Darke, Co-Founder and CEO of Footprints Baby Loss Twin & Triplet Support:
‘Whilst we find these statistics shocking and totally unacceptable they come as no surprise to us at Footprints Baby Loss, as we see the growing number of bereaved twin and triplet families accessing our support.’

Suzie Scofield, Co-Founder and COO of Footprints Baby Loss Twin & Triplet Support:
“Sadly these figures are not a true representation of the total numbers because TFMR and loss under 24 weeks gestation are not included.

As a charity run by bereaved parents for bereaved parents, it feels really important not to lose sight of the fact that these numbers are talking about real life loss, trauma and long lasting grief.”

Footprints supports families who experience the death of a twin, triplet or more at any stage. We provide vital support to parents & families given by those who have first hand experience of twin or triplet loss.

Our support is in the form of befriending, online support groups & a private online community group.
